As part of its Swarnandhra Vision 2029, the Government of Andhra Pradesh has designed a strategy to transform agriculture and its allied sectors in the state. The aim is to transform the Primary Sector, with the goal of making Andhra Pradesh one of the top three leading Indian states. Swarnandhra Vision 2029 is a very comprehensive long-term plan encompassing all the government and non-government agencies in the agriculture sector and for the overall development of agriculture and its allied sectors. Rythu Kosam’s focus will be on:
(a) increasing productivity of the primary sector;
(b) mitigating the impact of drought through water conservation and micro-irrigation;
(c) postharvest management to reduce wastage; and
(d) and the areas of processing, value addition capacity and supply chain of identified crops.
The Government of Andhra Pradesh and ICRISAT Development Center put together a strategy for achieving double digit growth. Towards this, ICRISAT will provide technical assistance to the Government of Andhra Pradesh in steering the process of the development of the Primary Sector. The project aims to transform the Primary Sector in all 13 districts of Andhra Pradesh, India, by increasing productivity and improving rural livelihoods in horticulture, animal husbandry, fisheries and other sectors. This will benefit around 7 million farmers in the state in a phased manner. Rythu Kosam will bring together the Department of Agriculture, Horticulture, Sericulture, Animal husbandry, Fisheries, Irrigation, Marketing and Rural development to benefit farmers holistically. The strategy is to build partnerships between national and international research organizations and state line departments and harness the synergy through science-led development. The principle of convergence is being followed so as to catalyze academic and research partnerships to benefit farmers through development research. An inclusive market-oriented development approach will be used to enhance productivity and profitability so that markets benefit small and marginal farmers.
