Enhancing Groundnut Productivity in Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka through Farmer Acceptable Climate Smart Strategies and Weather Based Crop Management Advisories

Duration: 2018-2021

Location: Andhra Pradesh & Karnataka, India

Partners:

  1. Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM)
  2. Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES)
  3. Government of India

The specific objectives are:

  • To characterize agroclimate at Mandal / Taluk level in the major groundnut growing areas of two districts in Andhra Pradesh and one district in Karnataka using historical climate data and to assess the production potentials / risks and identify optimum sowing windows using crop-growth simulation models;
  • To enhance awareness on climate smart cultivation practices including weather-based crop management advisories among the groundnut farmers in selected Mandals / Taluks in the three target districts;
  • To develop a suitable groundnut crop management advisory system based on forecast model outputs of Monsoon Mission-II and disseminate advisories to registered farmers;
  • To generate and validate crop genetic coefficients for the presently popular cultivars and up-coming new cultivars suitable for the target districts; and
  • To build capacity of the stakeholders and assess the impacts by adapting, monitoring, learning and evaluation of the approach in the area of climate smart agriculture.
