Summary:
The Bellary district of Karnataka is a hotspot of water scarcity, land degradation and poor socio-economic conditions. ICRISAT along with the Department of Agriculture, District watershed development, NGO and local community started implementing watershed interventions in four villages near the JSW factory covering 7000 ha area. This project targets four villages namely Doddanthapur, Chikkanthapur, Kodalu and Joga in Sadhur taluk with 1,930 families engaged in agriculture and 293 families are landless.
The specific objectives are:
- To establish a “ Model Site of Learning” in low-rainfall rainfall zone
- To enhance water availability and its (green and blue water) use efficiency for diversifying the livelihood systems in the target villages by adopting integrated water resource management approach; and
- To build capacity of the farmers in the region for improving rural livelihoods through knowledge sharing and dissemination strategy.
