Duration: 2016-2017

Location: Telangana, India
Partners:

  1. SAB Miller India

Summary:
ICRISAT along with SAB Miller India, district administration, and community is working together to address the issues of water scarcity and poverty in the rural areas surrounding the SAB Miller Breweries located in Medak district. This initiative will develop strategies for the sustainable management of water resources in the region by adopting an integrated water resource management approach at the catchment scale. Science-based technologies along with community participation will be the pillars of sustainable development of water resources in the region. Since water is a common resource and does not have boundaries, collective action is very important in the management of water resources. The overall goal of this initiative is to develop sustainable water resources in the surrounding areas of the factory while contributing to improving the livelihoods of the people dependent on agriculture. Management of water resources in the region will not only improve the livelihoods of the poor, but also lead to sustainable development of water-based industries such as breweries.
The specific objectives of the project are to:

  • Improve agricultural productivity in select surrounding villages by adopting rainwater conservation and harvesting, as well as efficient use of water for improving livelihoods; and
  • Build capacity of the farmers in the selected villages so as to develop sustainable water management practices that enhance groundwater availability and use efficiency.
